God Has Place Eternity in our Hearts
“He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11 NASB
The New Living Translation 11 Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:11 New Living Translation
Solomon says that man’s work is a gift to be enjoyed. But that we have not understood the scope of God’s work from the beginning to end.
The scope of God’s work from beginning to end is to have a people with whom he can dwell. He desires to be in relationship with his creation. He provided for us a way to be redeem from our sinful state. From the beginning to the end, he has devoted himself to his creation made with the stamp of His image.
St. Augustine of Hippo who was one of the early Christian theologians and philosophers who is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers in Western Christianity said, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”
What we do with our lives makes a statement to the world of who we are and what we value. Through God the Holy Spirit we are given gifts and abilities to use to proclaim the good news. What is the good news? It is that we were created to live forever with our creator God. Sin created separation between God and man. Jesus provided the sacrifice required to bridge the separation. We can cross that bridge by trusting in Jesus as our only way to the Father and eternal life.
The famous French Mathematician and Philosopher Blaise Pascal’s wrote: “What else does this craving, and this helplessness, proclaim but that there was once in man a true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace?”
Adam and Eve walking with God in the cool of the evening portrays what man’s true happiness would be like. Their time in the garden was innocent and a satisfying in the purest way of life. Until that pesky serpent caused them to doubt and sin was born in the heart of man. Thus it left the empty print and trace of happiness.
The rest of Pascal’s quote is: “This he tries in vain to fill with everything around him, seeking in things that are not there the help he cannot find in those that are, though none can help, since this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and immutable object; in other words by God himself.”
Solomon a man who had riches, women, power everything a human might desire but he still wrote that it was “vanity and striving after the wind and there was no profit under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 2:11 NASB
In the gospel of John we read the words of Jesus: “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.” The words “innermost being” in the Greek text is “koilos, meaning hole or empty place.” There is the description of a spiritual empty place in the heart of man that hungers and thirst after that living water that only Jesus can give.
One last quote, C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity writes, “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”
We were made for another world and God has placed eternity in our hearts so we might long for it so deeply that we cannot rest until we find rest in Him.
God has place Eternity in our hearts (God given poem September 21,2017)
Lord you have set eternity in our hearts
For you want a people that are set apart
Great was the price you had to pay
That we might dwell with you one day
Such love and mercy we don’t deserve
Your kindness poured out from your reserve
These are the very things we seek
With open arms you long to speak
You sent your Son to come to earth
So meek and low was His birth
To fulfill the law and to us impart
A path to you fixed from the start
His life was freely given
Then he returned to heaven
To prepare a place for His bride
To reign forever by His side
Still He does not leave us all alone
His Holy Spirit guides us until we’re home
God the Holy Spirit sent in us to dwell
A steadfast comfort our hearts will tell
A longing you’ve place within your child
Praising and serving for I’m reconciled
A home in heaven around your throne
We wait to hear the trumpet blown
Without you Lord we’re without hope
While on this earth we only cope
Until we see within our inner part
That you have set eternity in our heart
