The Ocean’s Call
I have often wondered what draws me to the ocean. It isn’t the sand! It isn’t the crowds! It isn’t the jellyfish or the red tide! But yet strangely I am drawn there.
My favorite time is the early morning when there are only a few of us who wander down to see what the ocean has brought into the shore during the night. I love the silence and the rhythm of the waves.
This year as I thought about why I love my time at the ocean’s edge, several passages from God’s Word about oceans came to mind.
I was reminded how great and mighty our God is. He is mightier than the oceans.
Psalm 33:7 He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses.
Psalm 93:2-5
2 Your throne has been secure from ancient times;
you have always been king.
3 The waves roar, O Lord,
the waves roar,
the waves roar and crash.
4 Above the sound of the surging water,
and the mighty waves of the sea,
the Lord sits enthroned in majesty.
5 The rules you set down are completely reliable.
Holiness aptly adorns your house, O Lord, forever
The power of the ocean amazes me! How the same ocean that causes violent storms and hurricane winds can be as still as a rolling river boggles my mind.
The vastness in depth and width is immeasurable. The horizon says there is somewhere out there an eternity with two places. One is filled with hope and promise. One with darkness and destruction. One is with Jesus the other is with the enemy of our soul. The very thought of the differences drives me to pray for those in the path of the deceiver.
He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea. Job 9:8 NIV
Next the secrets and the mysteries of the sea overwhelms me. The variety in color and size and design of all that God has created and placed in such a deep beautiful space is so amazing. Psalm 104:25 Here is the ocean, vast and wide,
teeming with life of every kind,
both large and small.
God’s creation of so many creatures in the ocean astounds and reminds me that He cares for His creation. He provides a home just suitable for each of His creations. He designed with such details all we would need. Why can’t we see how much He cares for us?
There is such variety is all of His creation from the depth of the ocean to the height of the heavens. But one thing I will for all of eternity praise Him for is the sacrifice and the grace He poured out on Calvary for Me and You!
Conclusion:
I am drawn to the ocean’s shore because there I can be still and experience God. There the rhythm of the waves syncs my body, soul and spirit to His Spirit. I hear God speak more clearly. It isn’t an audible voice but yet that still small voice that can thunder from the heavens or the roar of the oceans wave and awaken me, refresh my spirit and give me courage to face another day.
Revelation 19:5-6
“And from the throne came a voice that said,
“Praise our God,all his servants, all who fear him,
What wondrous love is this
from the least to the greatest.” Then I heard again what sounded like the shout of a vast crowd or the roar of mighty ocean waves or the crash of loud thunder: “Praise the LORD!
For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.”

Father,
I pray you will take me deeper into your presence. Keep my feet from wandering. I am yours and you are mine. You remind me of your presence everyday in so many ways. Help me be still and awaken my spirit to the miracle of your presence in my life.
All praise be to you,
Your child.
