Picture of hydrangeas
25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
Ezekiel 36:25-26
Hydrangeas are a favorite perennial in the South. Colors of blue, pink, white, and purple: It all depends on the content of the soil and boy do they love water. The pH of the soil is what determines the color of a hydrangea. Acid soil produces blue, alkaline soil produces pink, and neutral soil produces a mix of blue and pink, often appearing purple. A cut and dried hydrangea can look beautiful in an arrangement on a mantle but the color is mostly lost. If you change the soil, you change the color because the water takes the nutrients dissolved in the soil and delivers them to the bloom.
Christians are like hydrangeas. We all need lots of water (The Word) to nourish us with the nutrients dissolved within the water. We too will change color and texture based on our attachment to the plant and the adequacy of the water we receive. The more “water” we get the fuller and more vibrant our colors. All the colors are needed to make the most beautiful displays. (John 15:5)
The colors represent the gifts of the Spirit and their manifestations. (I Corinthians 12:7-11) It’s funny because if you ask a hydrangea lover what their favorite color is, they have a preference, and will work to change the soil content to produce their favorite color. (I like the mixed ones.) Like little children wanting another’s toy insteading of playing contentedly with our own. We covet another’s gifts or absolutely want no part of another’s gifts. God on the other hand enjoys cultivating into our lives what is missing. He is the master gardener: pruning for more blooms, adding or subtracting to provide what is needed for His intended outcome. Watering constantly to provide the main ingredient necessary to give the “new heart and spirit” to us.
Watch your “water” content. Insure your soil is good. Stand and reach high for the Son. Bow your beautiful head (bloom) in worship. Adorn the life of another with beauty and goodness that they too may see the Master. Isaiah 58:11 promises, “The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.” (See Freda’s post 7/30/2015 and her bio)
Father,
Thank you for the many reminders of your provisions in nature that leave us without excuse! Water us with Your Word. May we drink deeply and absorb all the nutrients contained within the pure water You provide.
