John on Patmos
Revelation 1:9
I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Has anyone ever inquired of you, “What would you want if you were stranded on a deserted island?” Or asked, “Have you ever considered what pages of scripture you believe to be vital?”
This subject came up over lunch as we discussed a new Bible study and Biblical studies needed for new believers and seekers of truth.
Well, of course I had an opinion. A long held opinion: If, I were “cast away” to anywhere I’d want the books of John’s gospel, the Acts of the Apostles, and James. John’s gospel (good news) tells us who Jesus is—the ONE and ONLY Son of the Most High God; Acts shows us what is possible when we live allowing the Holy Spirit of God control in our lives to positively affect others; and James gives us practical directions of how to live out our faith day to day before a watching world and be transformed into the image of Christ. Yes, that a bit more than a page but I need all the direction I can get.
As much as I would miss Psalms and Proverbs, my three chosen books would lead me to the wisdom of Proverbs and the prayers and praises of the Psalms. Romans 1:20 reminds us creation shouts of the Almighty we witness in nature every day. The prophets can be heard in the book of John, as Jesus, the promised redeemer of the entire Old Testament is now revealed.
John 1:1-4 sums up John’s gospel
Acts 2:17-21 sums up Possibilities
James 1:26 sums up James’ how to guide.
These are the foundation stones of our faith. I am so thankful for the Word of God!
The same John who wrote the gospel named after him, also wrote Revelations while exiled on the island of Patmos. John, “the beloved,” had the words of Christ and the Torah in his heart and on his mind. As he sat in lonely solitude these words comforted him. In meditating on God’s promises, he was led, by the Holy Spirit of Christ, to write down his vision of all that is to come as these words, spoken by Christ, echoed from the past, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (Emphasis mine) John 16:33.
It has been said by someone (I cannot find the quote’s author), “If you had only one page of scripture it would be enough for the Holy Spirit to point you to Jesus, the Messiah.” Now this is a cool thought.
LORD, Father in Heaven,
Use me as a page of Scripture to point another to Jesus. Forgive me when I have caused another to “stumble over me while looking for You!”
In His name I ask this,
Amen
