Passover Observance
I Corinthians 5:7c, “Christ our Passover has been sacrificed.”
Passover is an observance by the Jewish people in remembrance of God setting them free from bondage and death in Egypt as recorded in Exodus. The Israelites had lived in Egypt for over 400 years and because the Egyptians feared them, they made them slaves. God sent Moses to lead the people out of Egypt. After nine attempts to persuade the Pharaoh to let the people go, God instructed the people to prepare for the Passover.
When I See The Blood, I will pass over
The Israelites slaughtered a lamb or goat and put the blood on the doorpost on a specific night. Exodus 12:23, “When the Lord passes through to strike Egypt and sees the blood on the lintel and the two doorposts, He will pass over the door, and not let the destroyer enter your houses to strike you.” The Lord passed through Egypt that night and killed the firstborn of all the Egyptians who did not have blood on the doorpost.
Remember the Passover
The lamb or goat was to be unblemished and they were not to break any of its bones. God instructed them to remember that day because He brought them out of Egypt by His hand. God set them free from death and bondage. The Jewish people celebrate the Passover each year in remembrance of what God did for them. God’s chosen people are still waiting for the Messiah.
Our Sacrifice
Jesus Christ came to earth to be our sacrificial Lamb. He died once and for all for you and me to set us free from bondage and eternal death. Jesus said in Matthew 26:2, “You know that the Passover takes place after two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.” He knew He would be the sacrifice and face an excruciating death for our sins. He was the unblemished Lamb and the Bible records that His bones were not broken. Hebrews 9:12 NKJV, “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood He entered in once into the Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.” Jesus the Passover Lamb only died once for us to have eternal redemption. We have no need for another sacrifice.
When I see The Blood
The blood on the doorpost of the Israelites homes meant death had already taken place. It was symbolic of the coming Lamb which would die for us. Jesus shed His blood so that we might go free. Our debt is paid. If you have the blood of Jesus covering the doorpost your heart, then you will spend eternity in heaven with the Lamb.
As Easter approaches this week, remember what Christ did for you. Jesus’ love is amazing grace. He died for you. Revelation 5:12, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain.”
