Why are we here?
Romans 14:8, KJV, “We live unto the Lord.”
What if….
What if God had willed each person to enter heaven at the moment of salvation. Once we repent and confess Jesus Christ as Lord, we are with Him. After all, we shall not be perfected until our souls get to heaven. If the Lord so willed, He could have chosen to change us from imperfection to perfection and taken us to heaven at once.
The question then becomes why are we here? Why would God keep His children out of paradise any longer than necessary? As the army of Christ, why are we still in the battlefield, when one charge might bring victory? Why are we wandering through a maze often time blindly seeking the way to go? Let’s explore scripture to find some of the reasons we remain on earth.
We Are Here to Share the Gospel
Matthew 13:3, Jesus said, “Behold a sower went out to sow.”
Jesus told many parables throughout His earthly ministry. In Matthew 13, He tells the parable of the sower. A sower is one who scatters seeds on different types of ground in this parable. The seeds, Jesus interprets, is the Word of God. The sower is the child of God who shares Jesus with others. Some may receive the gospel and others may reject it, but the believer is suppose to tell others about Christ. God has chosen to leave believers on earth that we may share the gospel with others.
We Are Here to be Salt
Matthew 5:13a, “You are the salt of the earth.”
Salt has been and still is a beneficial element to food. I love to add salt to my vegetables, even my watermelon. Salt has been used for centuries in processing foods and preserving foods when there was no refrigeration. Jesus tells us we are salt. Salt in the Bible represents purity and goodness. As salt, Christians help preserve Christianity and bring goodness to the world around us. Without salt, the
Christians Godly influence, this world would be filled with evil. God has chosen to leave Christians on earth so we can be an influence of goodness and purity.
We Are Here to Labor
Matthew 9:37-38, “Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore, pray the Lord of the harvest to send our laborers into His harvest.”
When I was a child, the farmers in my area sought laborers in the fall to harvest the cotton and corn. Time was important to salvage the crop and get as much gathered as possible. When there were not enough laborers, the farmer’s yield was down.
As Christians, our labor is to tell others of Jesus and reach out to those in need. The harvest are the souls won to the Lord. The time is of the essence because Jesus will return soon and there will not be another opportunity for our family and friends to accept Him. God has chosen to leave us on earth so that we can labor for the harvest.
We Are Here to Glorify God
Romans 15:6, “that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
There are many scriptural reasons that God has left us here on earth after conversion. I have just selected a few important reasons. The most significant reason is to glorify God in all we say and do. If He is glorified through our lives, then we have certainly lingered on earth to fulfill His commands.
