A Walk in the Garden

Genesis 3:8a, NKJV, “And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.”

Nature and walks outside are always calming and pleasurable to me. My granddaughter and I walked to the pier a few weeks ago and there was a dragonfly caught in a spiderweb. It was fluttering and trying to escape. I proceeded to unattach the sticky web from the wings of the dragonfly as I talked to it.

My granddaughter, Emma, said, “You talk to dragonflies?”

“Yes, I do.” was my response.

As I thought about it, I talked to bugs, frogs, 2 dogs, a kitten and 5 chickens!

I even talk to the flowers and shrubs at times. Most important are my talks with God during my day.

The chickens knew my voice and when they heard me exit the house, they came running to stand at my feet. We walked together and they would chatter and peck bugs while I talked. They seemed to find comfort and safety in my presence unless something happened to frighten them at which time they would run for shelter.

Walking in the Garden

In Genesis 2, we read that God and Adam talked to each other. In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve heard God walking in the garden. The assumption is that this was not an uncommon event. God communed with Adam and Eve in the cool of the day. They walked through the garden enjoying the beauty that God had created. The animals were not afraid of them. The herbs and fruit were there to be eaten. Fresh water ran through the garden. Life was serene and beautiful. I can even imagine Adam and Eve talked with the animals as they gathered around. I’m certain they greatly anticipated their visit with God.

The Holy Spirit Guides

Unfortunately, sin and disobedience brought distance between Adam, Eve and God.

Through God’s plan, after the resurrection of Jesus, the Holy Spirit came to reside in those who believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. The Holy Spirit works in us to guide us to do the Lord’s will. Through the Holy Spirit we commune with God. The Bible tells us that when we are unable to word our needs to the Lord, the Holy Spirit prays for us.

Prayers of Incense

Psalm 141:2a, “Let my prayer be set before You as incense.”

The Bible addresses prayer often. We are to pray without ceasing. Continually we need to be communicating with God. Prayer is our conversation with God. The Bible says that our prayer is like the fragrance of incense to Him. He also talks to us. Our prayers should be a two way conversation where we talk and listen to Him.

Talk to God

Do you talk to God? Are you hearing what God is telling you? Do you listen? Are you obeying? God loves us even as we are. He longs for a relationship with each of us.

Go to Him, talk to Him, seek His direction and obey!

But God

The dragonfly was set free, but I’m not sure it survived. The chickens have taken up residence with a friend. I miss them, but they were more responsibility than I needed.

The tree frogs jump out of my watering can frequently on my arm. We have brief and loud talks! But God, He listens and speaks as we walk in the garden.

I love Him so.

About Paula Wallace

A child of God, wife, mother and grandmother of 6 precious children. I love art, nature and treasure my dear friends. Through the valleys and mountaintops, God led me to His saving grace at the age of 32. Since then the valleys and mountaintops have proven His love to me. I am learning to trust Him in all things. My prayer is that you, too, accept Jesus as Lord and Savior and trust Him. The Bible verse that I lean on mostly is Proverbs 3: 5-6 “ Trust in the Lord with all your heart. And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path.”NKJV Paula Wallace
