Those Trees Have Leaves
Matthew 13:14, NKJV, “Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, and seeing you will see and not perceive.”
Benjamin Franklin is often credited with the invention of glasses; however, in a google search I found that he invented the bifocals because of his need to see. Glasses are such a fantastic tool to help people see clearly. When the things we see are fuzzy or distorted, it makes it hard for people to understand what they are seeing.
Trees Have Leaves
Years ago my son Joe had difficulties reading words on the blackboard. His elementary school teacher told me to have his eyes checked. After the optometrist examined him, we were told he definitely needed glasses. When he put on his first pair of glasses, we walked out of the office and Joe said with amazement,
“Momma, those trees have leaves.” My heart melted into a puddle of inadequacy as a mother. My child could not see! How did I not know that? Once he put on glasses, he could clearly see the objects around him.
Our Spiritual Vision
As Christians, when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we can see through the ‘eyes’ of the Holy Spirit. We can see the meaning of scripture and the hope of eternal salvation. As we study and learn more of what the Bible says, our spiritual vision becomes clearer.
The Glasses of Salvation
What about those who are lost? The Bible tells us that those who do not know Jesus cannot see or hear the things of God. They do not understand scripture or know the love of God. Misunderstanding of the Christian faith is very prevalent around the world. So often I wonder how people can be so cruel and hateful. How can someone needlessly take another life, steal another’s property or say things that are demeaning and offensive? Then I remember these people are blinded because they don’t know Jesus. They need the glasses of salvation to see the error of their ways and the love of Jesus.
Living Like Unbelievers
I Corinthians 3:3, HCSB, “you are still fleshly. For since there is envy and strife among you, are you not fleshly and living like unbelievers?”
Before we blame all acts of violence and hatred on unbelievers, we need to check and see what the Bible says about the Christian. Paul says many of us are fleshly and living like unbelievers. Christians are also guilty of acts of violence and hatred because we don’t follow the Holy Spirit and spend time with God. What a difference we could make in the world if we all lived on the meat of the word and acted like the example Jesus Christ set for us.
Spending time in the word is like putting on glasses fresh and anew each day and seeing the leaves on the trees. Have you put on your glasses today?
Paula Wallace
Dear Father, give me a strong desire in my heart to be steady in the word and spend more time with You. Help me to be spiritually minded, not fleshly minded. Help me to be patient with those who don’t know you as their Lord and Savior, lifting them up in prayer that they may one day be saved and showing them the love of the Lord through my life. Amen
