Jesus Kinsman-Redeemer
Who doesn’t enjoy Hallmark Christmas movies? The ‘live happily ever after’ is a feel good ending to every one of their movies. The girl always gets the man of her dreams after much disappointment and drama.
Boaz the Kinsman-Redeemer
Ruth 1:16, NCSB, “for wherever you go, I will go, wherever you will live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.”
In the Bible, the book of Ruth could be written into a Hallmark movie. Naomi lost her husband and two sons. Ruth, her daughter-in-law, loved Naomi and chose to remain with her. She worked in the fields gleaning barley so they could eat. Ruth happened to be on the property of Boaz, who was a member of Ruth’s dead husband’s family.
Boaz was the kinsman-redeemer. Ruth and Boaz married and had a son named Obed.
Obed was the grandfather of David. I’m sure life was not all happiness and bliss, but the book of Ruth leaves us with that ‘happily ever after’ feeling.
A Male is Kinsman-Redeemer
Matthew 1:1, “The historical record of Jesus Christ”
Matthew 1:5, “Boaz father Obed by Ruth”
Boaz is the perfect example of a kinsman-redeemer. The Hebrew word (go el) designates one who delivers or rescues. A kinsman- redeemer is a male relative who had the privilege or responsibility to act on behalf of a relative who was in trouble, in danger or in need. Boaz was the next of kin that had the privilege of marrying Ruth to redeem the family lineage.
Jesus is Our Kinsman
Hebrews 2:11, AMP, “Both Jesus who sanctifies and those who are sanctified [that is, spiritually transformed, made holy, and set apart for God’s purpose] are all from one Father; for this reason He is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.”
We are adopted into the family of God when we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Hebrews tells us that we all have one Father. Through the blood of Jesus we are made Holy. Jesus is not ashamed to call us his brothers and sisters. He is our kinsman.
Hebrews 2:18, “Because He Himself [in His humanity] has suffered in being tempted. He is able to help and provide immediate assistance to those who are being tempted and exposed to suffering.”
Because we are brothers and sisters of Christ, Jesus is able to help and assist us when we are facing temptations or suffering. He is our Redeemer. Jesus fulfills the Old Testament kinsman-redeemer obligation. He delivers and rescues His brothers and sisters. He has a responsibility to help us.
Remember the Kinsman-Redeemer
Luke 2:10, NCSB, “I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today a Savior who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David.”
Jesus was born for us. He was born to redeem us. Jesus fulfills all the offerings and sacrifices of the Old Testament. He is the true kinsman-redeemer of everyone who calls Him Lord and Savior. With Christmas rapidly approaching, we must remember our kinsman-redeemer and worship Him with praise and thanksgiving for all He does for us. Like the Hallmark movies, our eternal life will be a life lived ‘happily ever after’.
Aren’t you glad you know Him?
