The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them. Oh fear the LORD, you His saints: for [there is] no want to them that fear Him. Come you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. Psalm 34: 7, 9, 11 (KJV)
I Know He Watches Over Me
I read these verses and instantly a song pops into my mind: His Eye Is on the Sparrow. Read the words:
Why should I feel discouraged
Why should the shadows come
Why should my heart feel lonely
And long for heaven and home?
When Jesus is my portions
A constant friend is He
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me.
I sing because I’m happy
I sing because I’m free
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me.
(Based on Matthew 10:29-31; see May 4, 2016 He Watches Over You)
Life is Hard
NO WANT! Despite discouragement, sorrow, pain, loneliness, l-o-n-ging to leave this earth because life is frankly just HARD; the Word of God says, I am protected because I revere the Lord my God..
David, the worshipping, warrior king. David who loved God, trusted God, and wrote down all that was flowing from his heart. David the king who had experienced deliverance, forgiveness, rescue from danger and death, David understands WHO has sustained his life through the years of exposure to the elements, wild animals, a crazy king, enemies, and even his own stupidity (can I call a decision to have an affair with a married woman and then having her husband killed stupid? I thought so.) David writes this: All that is required is fear of the LORD. No matter how low David went, he still stood in awe and reverence to Almighty God. He knew where his hope was found. This is the definition of “no want!” David writes to encourage his fellow worshippers and teach the young. Is this not what love does? Is this not leadership? Is this not PROTECTION?
The Lord Rescues His Own
The LORD has more than once rescued me or those I love. Is it not reasonable that I too would desire to encourage you? Teach my children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and those I come in contact with to choose to “fear God?”
Our faith is the basis of our protection (lack of want) because Jesus promises to always be with us. One more thing, He is a risen Savior. He is ALIVE! Zephaniah 3:17 says it this way: “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” Just like a sparrow sings! Does this knowledge not invoke awe and reverence of our God? Psalm 34 has been the source of inspiration used by the Holy Spirit to ignite a fire for a soul in need of a song:
