Last week’s blog post began a series on planting mixed pots. In planting a mixed planting, begin by planting a thriller. The thriller is the plant that draws the eye, usually tall and pretty. In comparison, the Thriller in our lives should be Jesus Christ. He should be the focus of our lives.
The Filler
After planting a thriller in the pot, there needs to be a filler. The fillers are plants that bush and fill the pot with colors. It can be one or more plants that add beauty and fullness to the pot. There are many options for plants that fill. Zinnias, begonias, geraniums, salvia and marigolds to name a few. A variety of houseplants work as well provided your pot is in the shade. I usually add a mixture of fillers and an abundance. Keep in mind; however, the more plants, the more water and fertilizer it will need to keep them growing well.
Filler 1 – The Bible
Psalms 109:105, NKJV, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
The fillers in our spiritual life are the Bible, prayer and praise. Once we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior, then we need to fill our lives with knowledge of Him through the Word of God. Spend time reading and studying God’s word. The Bible not only teaches us about Jesus so that we know and love Him, it also gives us direction in life.
Psalms 119:42b, NKJV, “I trust in Your word.”
Psalms 119:74b, NKJV, “I have hoped in Your word.”
Filler 2 – Prayer
II Thessalonians 5:17, NKJV, “Pray without ceasing.”
Another filler in our lives is our prayer life. Talking with God and listening to His direction and love for us fills our heart with joy and love for Him. We should pray with thanksgiving. He alone can give us peace.
Filler 3 – Praise
Psalms 150:6, NKJV, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.”
The third filler in our Christian walk is praise. We are to praise God throughout the day. Praise Him for what He has done in your life. God is awesome! Psalms 150:6 says that everything that has breath should praise the Lord. Psalms 150:1 instructs us to praise Him inside and outside. Verse 2 tells us to praise Him for His excellent greatness. In my experience, even though circumstances seem drear, praising God brings joy to my heart. It doesn’t change the circumstances at that moment, but I’m focused on the One who can.
Beauty in Filling
As we apply the word of God, seek Him in prayer and spend our day praising Him, then our lives will be filled. The joy and peace He offers will comfort us no matter our circumstances. The beauty of our filling will entice others to want to know Jesus Christ.
