What Does Your Love Look Like?

“What Does Your Love Look Like?”

“One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?” The man answered, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!” Luke 10: 25-28 (NLT)

Head vs Heart Love

My bible studies class is continuing the video study, “Unfiltered Jesus.” In the video, Drew Karschner paints a great picture of what love looks like and who our neighbor is. Drew speaks about how in our head, we know what the right thing to do is in the situations we come across, but does our heart? Love in Action

“The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.

“Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. “ Luke 10:29-34 NLT

Opportunities to Love

This question really got me thinking. How many opportunities have presented themselves right in front of me, and I didn’t move my feet? How many times have I been like all the people who passed right by? How many times have I known what to do, but I didn’t live it out? Drew makes the best statement I have heard in a long time. He points out what Jesus said.

“The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here. Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.” Luke 10: 37-39(NLT)

Show Your Love in Action

So the next time you have a “love your neighbor” experience don’t just know what the right thing to do is. Follow through and connect what you know to do with your heart. Drew Karschner reminds us all what Jesus meant by “love your neighbor.” It is whoever needs a hand, a break, an ear, or any need you can think of. Don’t just take notice of the need, but let it motivate your heart to act and do something to help. I believe every word in the verses above and Jesus wants and expects us to live them out in our everyday lives.

About Susan Browder

“Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.” Hebrews 11:1 I grew up in a small town in Alabama called Boligee. I am a wife and a mom to two sons, Nick who is 24 and married to his sweet wife, Mallory, and Jacob who is 18. My husband, Nicky, is a person of who I am so proud. Our lives changed forever on September 6, 2014 about 7:00 pm. Our son, Jacob, had an accident that would deeper our faith in God and challenge us in ways we never dreamed. My prayer is that our story will encourage others in their struggles with life altering experiences. My writing will be our testimonies but more than that it is about how we have a loving, caring God that carries us through the most difficult times of our lives.
