Wild Blackberries

wild blackberries

Wild blackberries are ready for picking. They are draping off the long vines. Some are green, some red, but if you look closely, there are many black ones. They are not as large as dewberries or the thornless orchard varieties. They sure are sweet and juicy, however.

Protect from the Obstacles

There has been an abundance of vines near my home and I have ventured to gather them for jelly and a cobbler. When picking wild blackberries, it is essential that the correct steps are taken to be protected from the obstacles.

Protection Includes

First, clothing needs to be long pants and long sleeves. The thorns on a blackberry bush are like a fish hook with a barb on it. Gloves and rubber boots would be helpful as well. If the thorn sticks you, don’t pull, just reverse your move for the barb to release.

Protection is Needed

Red bugs and ticks are prevalent in the tall grass and woods. Bug spray is used in excess to prevent insects.  Sun hats are a needed piece of protection from the hot rays that burn your skin. Then always be alert for snakes. A hoe or heavy stick will come in handy if needed. So much protection is needed to safely pick berries.

Ephesians 6:13, “ Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. “ NKJV

Be Prepared

God wants us to be prepared for the obstacles in life.

Paul tells us in Ephesians to put on the WHOLE armor of God. There will be no victory without His strength.

The word withstand means that we stand face to face against an adversary.

The Armor of God

The armor consists of truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the word of God. These are listed in Ephesians 6:14-17.

Ephesians 6:18a, “praying always”.

Prayer is the Battle

For each believer to put on the armor of God prepares us for battle. Prayer is the battle itself. God’s word is the chief weapon we use in our battle.

Preparing has Benefits

The benefits of preparing for berry picking are to harvest delightful berries for cobblers, jelly, and just plain enjoying. The benefits of putting on the armor of God are protection, blessings, and victory in Jesus.

Take the time to prepare.

About Paula Wallace

A child of God, wife, mother and grandmother of 6 precious children. I love art, nature and treasure my dear friends. Through the valleys and mountaintops, God led me to His saving grace at the age of 32. Since then the valleys and mountaintops have proven His love to me. I am learning to trust Him in all things. My prayer is that you, too, accept Jesus as Lord and Savior and trust Him. The Bible verse that I lean on mostly is Proverbs 3: 5-6 “ Trust in the Lord with all your heart. And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path.”NKJV Paula Wallace

We would love to hear from you
