For Such A Time As This

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.”

Psalm 127:3-5

 

Today is Mother’s Day. A day set aside to honor our mothers whether they be our birth, adopted, foster, step, god, or surrogate mother. Mother’s Day is not about who gave birth to you but about the countless women who have impacted your life.  My daughter once told a friend of mine who never considered herself a mother that she had “indeed been a mother by pouring into the life of any child!”  

Mothers all experience pain. It begins before a child is even born.  Children are born in pain as a direct result of the sin in mankind.   But the worst pain a mother faces is the loss of her child(ren) in death, disappearance, or distance.  (Genesis 3:16)

Isaiah 66:13: “As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.”

This past year, I have stood on the sidelines as dear friends said goodbye to their mothers and I have also watched as children and grandchildren were snatched from their mother’s arms.  The bond between mothers and children is undeniable.  In general, we all think we have the best MOM!  And in truth, we do because God Himself picked her out for us.

Today, many will celebrate their mom while others will mourn. Look around you, reach out to a hurting heart who wishes for one more minute with their mom or the mother who craves one more second with their child.   Ask them to tell you about their mom or their child. Reach deep inside and be vulnerable to share a memory of your mom that may need a bit of healing. 

To all the grandmothers who are raising your second crop of kiddos, THANK YOU!  Your sacrifice has been noticed. It is appreciated!

Give the gift of time.  Celebrate a mom who may have outlived her children. Tell a woman who has poured into you, “Thank you!”  

Psalm 139:13-14: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”

Acts 17:26  And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

God makes no mistakes! His sovereignty is always purposeful! He desires to draw you to Himself!  Trust He will reveal His purpose in time.

Hug (virtually of course, right now) a special woman in your life who has poured into you but doesn’t carry the label as your mother!  

To my grandmothers, my Mamma, my second mom, and to all the moms who gave one kind word of encouragement to me and loved me: THANK YOU! From the depths of my soul! You all have jewels in your crowns!  I honor and thank God for you today!  You are a priceless treasure in my life!

I am in the business of alleviating fear through education and lots of hand holding. As a swimming instructor, I have taught people of all ages to overcome fear of the water and I marvel as fear gives way to fearlessness, as panic turns to pure joy, as tears dissolve into giggles of glee, and pennies retrieved from the bottom of the abyss become trophies. As a nurse, I have been privileged to walk up to Heaven's gate as patients and family are welcomed home, witnessed the miracle of birth, helped mend broken hearts, and cared for the elderly as they wait. Scriptures number one admonition is "fear not." Question is HOW??? The Word becomes our swimming instructor and can help us learn to "tread water til Jesus comes." Something my students often thought I was going to make them do! So welcome to my pool! Jump in the cool water. Let it refresh your soul and feel the unseen hands of the Master Lifeguard lift you up and out of the deep water. Who knows, you just might even walk on water!
