“For He commands and raises the stormy wind, Which lifts up the waves of the sea. They mount up to the heavens, They go down again to the depths; Their soul melts because of trouble. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man.” Psalms 107:25-27a NKJV
God spoke
God spoke and a violent windy storm arose. The Psalmist describes the waves as going up to the sky and then sinking to the depths of the sea. The men on the ship were terrified. They lost their courage and most likely their lunch.
All of us experience storms in life. The problems come unexpectedly sometimes. We struggle with the problem. It seems there is no solution. Worry and fear are prevalent as we try to stand upright. “And are at their wits’ end.” Psalms 107:27b NKJV
At their wits’ end
All the skills the sailors had were useless. The men on the ship were trained sailors. They knew how to work the ship, but this storm was more than their skills could handle. ‘All their wits end’ means their wisdom was swallowed up. They had used every bit of knowledge and strength to save their lives and the ship to no avail.
In the midst of storms in my life, I tend to try everything within my ability to calm the storm or stop it. Whatever the problem, I’m working my hardest, using up all my strength and knowledge to solve it. Nothing seems to help and I get more and more stressed. Psalms 107:28a,
“Then”
Then – after all they struggled through on the ship. Then – after their best efforts failed. Then – after I have tried all I know how. Then – when nothing seems to work.
Then and only then —
“ they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.” Psalms 107:28-30 NIV
God Guides Us To The Shore
Why do we wait until we can’t go on before we cry out to the Lord? God brings us out of our storms. He stills the storm. He brings peace and quiet in our hearts. The Psalmist said He guided them to the harbor they longed for or their desired haven.
He will guide us. His direction will lead us to the place of peace and comfort even in the midst of the storm.
“Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.” Psalms 107:31 NIV
Be Thankful
It is hard to be thankful during a ‘storm’ in our lives. The Bible repeatedly tells us to be thankful. Praise Him throughout the crisis; however, after the storm, we can look back, remember and be so thankful for what God has done.
