Let Your Words Be a Blessing

Let Your Words Be a Blessing

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” Colossians 4:6 (ESV)

There have been many times in my life where my words have not been a blessing to others. Probably like all of us, I sometimes let the words roll out of my mouth a little too quickly without using a few moments to think of the right way to present them. My bible study class started a Tony Evans video series, “Watch Your Mouth.” Tony discusses how wisdom plays an important part of our words being a blessing. He says, “God wants us to be wise in our words and to use them to build up and not to tear down.” In this study, Tony reminds us, “we should season our words, so our words are heard as blessing.”

How many of us today still remember something hurtful that was said to us? It could have been something that we needed to hear, but the person’s delivery lacked the salt needed and it tore us down. How many of us were the person who did this? Have you torn down your children by something that you have said in the wrong way?

After the video series, my class discussed this further. One person said, “I want to be this person, the person who has this kind of wisdom that can bless a person and give them exactly what they need to hear. The kind that Colossians 4:6 is talking about. Don’t we all want to be this person? This should be exactly what we pray for this Christmas season. My prayer this Christmas season is for God to give me the words that I need in all situations. I pray for it to bless and to be helpful to them. I pray for the right words and the perfect amount of seasoning.

“Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.” Ephesians 4:15 (NLT)
