A Dropped Popsicle

“A Dropped Popsicle”

Nixon Lyn’s dropped popsicle

“What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31 (NLT)

One of my favorite memories as a little girl is playing ball outside with my sisters. When we got tired and hot, my mom would give us all a popsicle. Getting a popsicle is a small thing but to a child’s heart, it is much bigger and is one of the best feelings. I remember how we would always fight over the red ones and how bummed I was if I got stuck with the green one!

Time With Nixon Lyn

This weekend, I was blessed to spend some time with my grandchildren. As my granddaughter, Nixon Lyn, got hot and tired from running around outside, I asked her, “Nixon Lyn, do you want a popsicle?” Her eyes lit up as she said, “Yes,” paused and then chuckled as if she was so excited about the idea of getting a popsicle.

As I pulled out the bag of sugar-free popsicles, Nixon Lyn immediately told me, “Blue SuSu!” Moments later, Nixon Lyn had licked her blue popsicle so much that it became weak and broke as half of it fell to the ground. I will never forget the look on her face as she experienced the loss of her popsicle. She was heartbroken to see most of her blue popsicle was no longer with her. As I comforted her and let her know I had another blue popsicle she could have, she sucked up her disappointment and said, “Otay.” This was not the only time we lost a popsicle this day. It made me think about all the times she has ahead of her, where she will experience small losses and disappointments, and then other times that will be much more than a dropped popsicle.

Handling Disappointments

As I looked at Nixon Lyn, how she handled this, and how she responded as I took care of her loss, I thought about Matthew 10:29-31 and how much more God loves her. God has given Nixon Lyn a hugely supportive family and He will provide her with all that she needs as she experiences life and trusts Him. His eyes will always be on her.
