White gloves and hats in the ’50s and ’60s were the norms for women in the church and social gatherings. The gloves were most often white cotton or lace. Some of the gloves were short and went no further than the wrist and some were long to the elbow or above. The long gloves were mostly used in evening attire.
Marred by Dirt
The phrase ‘white-glove test’ was used to explain that some women used their white gloves to rub across a surface to make sure the hostess house was clean. Women who entertained their bridge clubs, garden clubs, or any social event would work so hard to clean their homes. Who would want their name marred by a dirty white glove!
Our Actions Reflect on God
Are we guilty of giving the ‘white-glove test’ on people? We watch and criticize because that person is faithful to church or claims to be a Christian, but lives a different life during the week. I think all Christians would fail the white glove test because we are imperfect, but the sad thing is that our actions reflect on God. To think that something said or done by a Christian would cause a person to turn away from God is frightening. Our aim in life is to reach others for Christ, not turn against Him.

People Have Spots and Blemishes
Speaking of the white glove test, the Bible tells us that some people have spots and blemishes. They would fail the test without a doubt. These people are spoken of in II Peter 2 as ones who cannot cease from sin and entice others to sin with them. It further speaks of them as having forsaken the right way and gone astray.
The Path is Narrow
As a Christian, we should pray for others and especially those people who have ‘unstable souls’ as it says in II Peter 2:14. Also, we shouldn’t be so quick to judge others lest we fall into the same trap. People are watching the Christian’s walk and are often turned away from God because of those who stray or set a poor example. The path we need to take is narrow and we must keep our eyes focused on God.

Jesus Christ Without Spot
The only person ever alive on earth without a spot is Jesus Christ. He died for you and me. None of us are spotless or able to pass the white glove test. We all have failures and shortcomings in our lives. Each day we must strive to keep ourselves spotless and blameless to serve the living God.
