Casting Crowns–Jesus Friend of Sinners https://youtu.be/rJXIugwiN7QWildflowers
Wildflowers are blooming in abundance this year. The black-eyed Susan’s, daisies, and Queen Anne’s lace color the landscape. There is one flower that grows on our property that blooms red. I don’t know the name of it, but each year that it blooms I am reminded of my grandson when he was 2 or 3 years old.
Piece of Candy
The red flowers are just gorgeous. After a period of time the blooms change to a bright red seed. The seed is kidney-shaped, hard and very shiny. It looks so much like a piece of candy.
Seeds
My grandson saw some seeds I had gathered on the stem to put in a flower arrangement. He showed them to his mother and called them candy. His mom did not know whether he had eaten one of the seeds. The poison control center could not help because we didn’t know the name of the plant. The best advice they could give was to get him to drink plenty of liquids. I don’t think he ate any of the seeds, but it sure was concerning for a while.
Sin is Appealing
The shiny, red seeds remind me how appealing sin seems to us. If sin was gross and ugly then we wouldn’t be so tempted to reach for it.
“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.”
Genesis 3:6 ESV

When the serpent, Satan, came to the garden, he deceived Eve and highlighted the tree that God had told Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit. When Eve saw the fruit, it appealed to her in three ways.
- Good for Food – appealed to her physical appetite. She wasn’t hungry or in need of anything to eat. God had provided plenty in the garden. She desired to have it because it looked good. Sin entices us in the same way.
- Delight to the eyes – appealed to the sense of aesthetics. It was beautiful, shiny and a delight to the eye. This is concerned with the emotional and sensational feeling of desiring to sin rather than an intellectual view.
-
Make one wise – intellectual pride. The desire to know more and be better than anyone else is sin. As a Christian, we should be humble and considerate of others. Pride has no place in our lives.
From the World
For all that is in the world— the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life —is not from the Father but is from the world.
1 John 2:16 ES

Sin can definitely be a momentary pleasure. The guilt and shame bring us to our knees. God forgives. To avoid sin is the best plan. Turn your eyes away and look at Jesus. Do not allow the temptation of sin to lure you.
