Meditations on the Heart

Heart Meditations

Recently, I have meditated a lot on the heart particularly mine. In November, I had to have a triple bypass. It came as quite a surprise for me because I had few symptoms. God has been so great to restore me so quickly.

When I learned I had to have this surgery, the verse in Psalm 73:26 came to mind repeatedly. “My heart and my flesh may fail, BUT God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.Psalm 73: 26 Since then I have meditated about my heart. I began searching the Bible for what God says about the heart.

God is the strength of my heart.

My first encounter with God’s Word was in Exodus 15:2. The children of Israel have just walked through the Red Sea on dry land. They had been horrific ordeals to get out of Egypt. Now on the other side, they rejoiced at what God had done for them. It struck me that the first thing they did was sing Moses’ song.

Exodus 15:1 begins, “I will sing to the Lord for He is highly exalted.”

In verse 2 we read, “The Lord is my strength and my song. He has become my salvation. This is my God and I will praise Him, my father’s God and I will exalt Him.

From the heart flows issues of life

Proverbs 4:23, we read a father’s instruction to his son concerning wisdom. Verses 20-23, tells the son to carefully pay attention to these words for they are “life to those who find them and health to their body. Watch over your heart with all diligence for from it flows the springs of life.”

On any given day, we hear hundreds of advertisements about the heart. Advertisements about how to eat, exercise and take care of our heart. And I believe we should pay attention to them but the most important exercise or food we need comes from the Lord. He is our source of life. The Lord is our portion forever. Portion? He is always enough for whatever we need. When things get tough and life is out of our control, God is there. God is the strength of my heart! Therefore I will trust Him. Lamentations 3:24 “ The Lord is my portion, therefore I will put my hope in Him.”

When you exercise this week, think about how you are building your heart muscle. Then remember your spiritual heart muscle; it needs exercise too.
