For God has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” —Hebrews 13:5
Thank you for meeting me here on another Tuesday. Jacob’s story continues with the summer of 2016. He is 16 and has just finished his second driving school. This was mandatory for him to get his license. The first school was in Troy and the second was in Dothan. As we left Dothan on July 22, 2015, this verse from Hebrews 13:5 fit perfectly, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
But to claim that God is with us every moment of every day, as close as our skin, in every turn of life, tear-stained or drenched in smiles—some would say that borders on insanity. Yet throughout history men and women have staked their lives on that truth. Abraham, Moses, Rahab, Joshua, David, Esther, just to name a few. The promise was true for them, but how can we know it’s true for us? It is true for us because of Jesus. By His coming, He says, “I want to be with you; I gave Myself to you; I gave Myself for you. Do you really think I would ever forsake you?”
How do you respond to this astonishing promise? Say it’s too good to be true. Say it sounds unbelievable. But don’t ignore it. In your hurts, your fears, your struggles, your temptations, there is no more wonderful promise than this: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”— Haddon W. Jacob gets his drivers license
Talk about a promise! He will never leave me or forsake me. God knows how difficult and challenging life was and is for us. While everyone else who was his age was getting their vehicles, Jacob was just trying to get his life back. Even though Jacob did not get his license on April 16, 2015 on his birthday, God didn’t leave us in that place of going nowhere. Three months later, Jacob got his driver license. As I look back in my journal, I see this entry. “Jacob has just completed two driving school courses and is now approved by the state of Alabama to drive. He turned 16 on April 23 and it’s July 22nd. He passed and has his license although I might not let him go anywhere. I will probably follow behind him for months when I do. Jacob is tickled to get his license and is all smiles. Lord, cover that red truck in the blood of Jesus and give my baby traveling mercies.”
My family looks back on so many times during this journey and see where God never left. HE supplies us daily with what we need and ask for. It is the best promise in the world.
Has said – Mark it down that the phrase “has said” is intensive and adds emphasis to the fact that the following promise was spoken by the Lord Himself! Furthermore, the verb said is in the perfect tense which means that God’s statement has been made at some point in time in the past and has not been retracted or reversed but is still in effect. His Word is a faithful (trustworthy) Word.
So we can say with confidence, “The LORD is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” Hebrews 13:6
