“WE become what we behold.” A quote in Jen Wilkin’s book Women of the Word:How to Study the Bible with both our Hearts and our mind.
In the Gospel of Mark, we find Jesus revealed as the Servant King. As the writer, Mark traces the steps of Jesus’ ministry by looking at the miracles He performed. He shows how important relationships are in ministry. The first chapter of the book gives us a look into Jesus submission to the Father. Jesus humbles himself to be baptized by John the Baptist. The Father speaks from heaven, “This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased,” It pleases God the Father when we bow in submission to His will. We then find that Jesus is quickly swept away to the wilderness for 40 days of testing.
After the 40 days in the wilderness, Jesus begins to call out followers. Andrew is the first one to follow Jesus, (John 1:40). Mark records the Jesus walks by the Sea of Galilee and sees Andrew and Peter fishing. “Jesus said to them, Follow Me and I will make you become fishers of men. They immediately left their nets and followed Him” (Mark 1:17-18 TLB)
They saw Jesus and with one sentence they left their lives to follow Jesus.
Would we have had the courage to be that obedient to a stranger?
They saw something in Jesus! They would watch, behold, and follow Him to the end of their life.
We become what we behold! What are we watching? What are we fixing our eyes upon?
What has Jesus called us to do? “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2 NASB)
Fix our eyes on the Lamb. Follow Jesus. What does that mean? First, I submit to Him. I study His Words. I listen to the Holy Spirit’s voice. I obey the things He commands. I Follow! I bring others to Jesus just as Andrew did. We also are called to be fishers of men!
John cried out, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” That is our calling today! Behold, Watch, Follow the Lamb.
What we Behold we Become!
