Isaiah 22:22 “And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.” (KJV)
Revelation 3:7
“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;”
II Samuel 7:16 “My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16“Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”‘” 17In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.…”
Matthew 1:1 “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:……17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.”
What little girl doesn’t dream of being a princess. Many have tiaras, dress-up princess gowns, “glass” slippers, and she dreams of marrying prince charming who will ride up on his white steed and save the day. For all believers, this is not a fairytale but a truth for we the church are the bride of Christ, descendant of King David and God says He will have a kingdom which will “endure forever.” Since we are to “rule and reign with Christ” I think we need to know what this key of David really is.
Jesus, in speaking to the Apostle John, gave him a revelation to share with His Bride. Jesus, through the angel assigned to each church, was explaining all His Bride needs to do to prepare for His return and be found a faithful Bride. The churches (representing different era’s of the church in history) all had areas of failure. The angel tells the church of Philadelphia that Christ Himself is the “key of David.” He is the one who opens and shuts and He has given this key to His church and is expecting us to use it to share the good news of Jesus with a world in need. “If people heed God’s calling and Christ’s message today, they will be the bride of Christ and sit on a throne with Him as kings and priests.” (copied from theTrumpet by Gerald Flurry www.thetrumpet.com/article/10776.24.156,0)
The key of David has several significant points:
- It belongs to king David, the “man after God’s own heart.” The personality God desires from mankind. God does not expect our perfection but our allegiance.
- Jesus is the head of the church, the Bride. He leads the church as the head of the body.
- Jesus has given His bride this key to use to spread the good news of the Savior.
- Christ used the key to open the door to heaven. There is no hidden agenda just love in action.
- When Christ rose from the dead, Satan could no longer shut the door. Our enemy is defeated and we can bring as many as will come into King David’s kingdom.
- We are Philadelphians, the faithful church, when as proclaimers of the gospel we are not denying the name of Jesus despite persecution.
- When we accept this key, we are spiritual Jews, adopted children of the Most High God.. We can never be disowned. We can “therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)
This key represents the ALL the authority of Christ as heir to David’s throne. A throne established to stand forever as fulfillment of the promise to Abraham to make him a great nation and to David as he was establishing his reign.
Why do we need this key now? It was given to us as a symbol of our authority to act in the Name of Jesus. He has given us His power of attorney to be able to transact kingdom business in Christ’s absence. We are to exercise our privileges as kings and priests NOW, To open the kingdom for others by sharing the gospel and to use all the tools available to us to meet the needs of a broken, hurting, and dying world. A power of attorney is only good in the absence of the living one it represents. Jesus passed His authority to His bride until He returns to establish His kingdom and then we will rule and reign with Him (II Timothy 2:12) “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10-11) We are ambassadors of Christ. We act and speak on behalf of the Lord. Ambassadors have all the authority of the king himself to open and shut the doors of the kingdom to others.
David was a warrior king. When Christ came He came as a suffering servant, a sacrifice. When He returns He will come to take His rightful place as KING. This is the gospel of peace we proclaim and defines us as Christians. This is our hope. This is our joy. This is our future.
The key of David represents all the legal and diplomatic authority of Christ and the kingdom of David He has inherited and as co-heirs we have the same authority, Now this is profound! Do you feel more like royalty now?
David was a man of failure. He had blood on his hands. What made him a man after God’s heart? Repentance, loyalty, and love. David’s son Solomon expressed in the Song of Solomon all this key represents in this love relationship between Christ and His bride:
My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him.
5. I rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped with myrrh, and my fingers with sweet smelling myrrh, upon the handles of the lock.
The Pulpit Commentary explains this in this way: “The metaphor is very apt and beautiful. How much he loved her! How he tried to come to her! As applied to the Saviour, what infinite suggestiveness! He would be with us, and not only knocks at the door, but is impatient to enter; tries the lock, and too often finds it in vain; he is repelled, he is resisted, he is coldly excluded. My heart was moved for him. מֵעַי, “my inner being”.”
The key of David is for us to use this key to aid in opening the door of Christ’s kingdom to the world He loves and willingly suffered for. Jesus told His disciples what this authority (power of attorney) included in Mark 16:15-18: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” And Paul in his letter to the Ephesians tells us we also get the very armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) Himself and he includes the reason we need this power of attorney and armor in Ephesians 6:12 when he writes: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” The weapons of our “warfare” are not manmade but divine to bring down “strongholds.” (II Corinthians 10:4) This key is not for the faint of heart.

Are you realizing like I am this bride is a force to be reckoned with? Ruling and reigning with Christ will take strength, energy, determination and courage. Yes, we are to love, forgive, and walk in humility. These are the two sides of the treasure we found on our dive to the bottom. I love God’s Word. His Name is Jesus, our King, our Savior, our Bridegroom. Psalm 132:11 pretty well sums it up: “The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.”
Treading til He comes,
