These are words that strike terror in the heart of many a individual, family, community, and nation. Why? Because we have NO CONTROL over the when, where, how, who.
The psalmist is speaking of just such cataclysmic events: The earth ceasing to exist, mountains crumbling. However, read carefully, he is stating “I am not afraid!” How can He do this? Is it false confidence or does the psalmist know something I NEED TO KNOW as I face an uncertain future?
The psalmist is declaring The LORD, Yahweh, God of Heaven, is his hiding place and his strength and his help. We have been digging through God’s Word and He has been revealing to us reason upon reason why we can trust Him and have no fear. Are we getting it or are we Israelite stubborn? Israelite forgetful? Israelite ungrateful?
Trouble in life is a F*A*C*T. My trouble may seem small to you and yours may appear inconsequential to me. But, we all know, my trouble is HUGE to me and your trouble is MONUMENTAL to you. Trouble makes us tremble, cry, and flee. We need what the Lord is providing in this scripture: help, a place to hide, strength.
It is here that we would do well to declare (remind ourselves often) God is my refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble. I AM is in the middle of our trouble. Write this and post it where you can read it daily until it becomes your breath, your very life source. He should be our first resource not our last resort.
The other thing we need to do is “be kind to everyone, for everyone is in the midst of a great battle,”(author unknown but quoted by The Officer and Gentleman as he fought for his life).
